Gratitude

In the midst of the winter holiday season and following the excitement of Giving Tuesday, I’m thinking about gratitude. For the work we do, and the incredible transformations we witness. For the families that have found their way to us, often in the face of tremendous challenges. For the times when, again and again, I’ve seen parents break down in my office—but this time, from relief, hope and exhaustion commingling on their faces. For the privilege and challenge of being entrusted with their children. For the moments of surprise and wonder when, hardly daring to believe it themselves, these children achieve goals they’d previously believed were impossible. And for the incredibly talented faculty and staff who make these breakthroughs possible with their depth of knowledge, compassion, and patience.

Finding the light.

Amidst darkening days and in difficult times, it can become all too easy to turn our attention to the impossible—all that seems out of reach, all that remains distant despite our best efforts. That’s one reason—one of many reasons—that I remain grateful for the work I do.

I see hope being born and borne out every day at Orchard Friends. I see it begin to grow where it seemed it would never grow again. Our focus on possibility, on capability, on compassion for ourselves and for others as we grow and learn, as we stumble and try, try again, helps me remember to keep my focus there, too. Surrounded by little miracles as I am each day, who could look away?

Sharing the love.

In the spirit of giving that defines this season, I wanted to share with you what some of our students and parents shared with me about why they’re grateful for Orchard Friends. From the sentiments that make me smile to the expressions of gratitude that make me tear up right alongside them, I’m so grateful for each one of them—and each one of you—this holiday season, and always.
